Gene Hackman’s Dementia Progression Slowed by Wife Betsy Arakawa Amid Ongoing Investigation into Her Rat Virus Death

Gene Hackman, renowned for his contributions to the film industry, recently revealed that he would not have survived without the unwavering support of his wife, Betsy Arakawa. In a heartfelt conversation with lifelong friend Tom Allin, the 95-year-old actor expressed gratitude for Arakawa’s care during his health struggles, particularly in the face of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Tragically, the couple was found deceased in their Santa Fe home last month, with Hackman attributing his longevity to his wife’s nurturing presence.

Allin shared that Betsy played a crucial role in keeping Hackman engaged with life, organizing his activities and maintaining communication with friends and family. Despite Hackman’s disinterest in technology, Arakawa ensured he stayed socially active, setting up golf dates and arranging visits through phone calls and emails. Friends described her as very attentive, even mixing soda water with his wine to promote healthier drinking habits, and always ensuring he had nutritious meals.

The couple, who had been married for about 34 years, faced their challenges, with Arakawa taking on the primary responsibility of care for Hackman as his health declined. Their love story started in a Los Angeles gym, marked by an endearing anecdote of Arakawa denying Hackman entry when he forgot his gym card. Their 30-year age difference never appeared to be an obstacle, with friends noting that they shared a deep bond and a genuine partnership.

Sadly, on February 26, the world learned of their passing. Autopsy reports revealed that Arakawa had succumbed to hantavirus on February 11, while Hackman followed suit about a week later. The couple’s close friends remarked on the isolation they experienced due to Hackman’s illness, but noted that Arakawa went above and beyond to keep him engaged with activities like puzzles and yoga classes online.

Hackman’s daughter, Leslie, voiced her appreciation for Arakawa’s staunch support, crediting her for keeping her father in remarkably good health well into his advanced years. Leslie shared that Hackman, despite his age, was fit and actively participated in Pilates and yoga sessions multiple times a week, thanks to his wife’s vigilant care. The bond shared between the couple, as described by family and friends, painted a picture of two individuals who cherished each other deeply and navigated their challenges hand in hand.

Though Leslie hadn’t seen her parents in recent months, she reflected on their closeness and expressed sorrow over the tragic turn of events. As the entertainment community mourns the loss of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, their legacy as a devoted couple highlighting the importance of love and care in the face of adversity endures.
