Hoda Kotb Reflects on Her Defining Moment at Today Show
In a heartfelt revelation, Hoda Kotb discussed the pivotal moment when she realized it was time to step back from the Today show. The celebrated journalist opened up during her recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “When I turned 60 in August, something shifted within me,” Hoda shared. “We had this stunning celebration at the Today show, and as I looked out at all the familiar faces and heartfelt messages, I felt this remarkable sense of fulfillment, like standing on the mountaintop for the first time.”
On September 26, Hoda disclosed her decision to leave the morning show, after a remarkable 16-year tenure. Although she will maintain her role as lead coanchor with Savannah Guthrie and continue hosting the fourth hour alongside Jenna Bush Hager until the start of 2025, she is preparing for a new chapter. In her farewell note to the Today staff, she expressed, “I know this is the right choice, but it’s bittersweet. The bonds I’ve formed here are truly special.”
Citing her daughters, Haley and Hope, as a significant influence in her life choices, Hoda explained her desire to focus more on family. “You really feel it as they grow,” she commented. “They need me more now, and I need to be there for them. I believe this transition will be a beautiful opportunity for all of us.”
Despite stepping back from her daily commitments, Hoda assured fans that she will still be part of the NBC family. “I’ll be engaged in various projects here,” she confirmed. Hoda has been a fixture at NBC since 1998, reflecting on her long-standing love affair with the network: “I actually started here 26 years ago. This truly is the longest love affair of my life.”
During her chat with Jimmy, he humorously mentioned the newfound free time she would have, suggesting activities like attending concerts or dating. Hoda laughed, acknowledging that while her priority is her daughters, she is also open to finding companionship. “This new schedule is going to allow me to breathe a little, relax, and hopefully meet someone special,” she said, emphasizing her belief that staying on Today would have hindered this possibility.
As for who might take her place on the fourth hour of Today, that remains under wraps. Fans and colleagues are left wondering who could possibly fill such big shoes.
