Will.i.am Addresses Sexuality Backlash and Embraces His ‘Ultra-Feminine’ Identity

In a candid discussion, music icon Will.i.am has opened up about the backlash he has occasionally faced regarding his sexuality and his pride in being ‘ultra-feminine.’ The judge on The Voice, who rose to fame as part of the Black Eyed Peas in the early 2000s, continues to make a significant impact on the entertainment scene, most recently returning to The Voice.

In a revealing interview for Steven Bartlett’s podcast, The Diary of a CEO, Will.i.am reflected on his upbringing and the absence of a father figure during his formative years. He stated, “Coming of age, I didn’t have a man in my life — a father in my life to guide me through that.” He credited his mother’s influence for shaping his identity, saying, “My mom did that, which probably made me ultra feminine. I have no shame in being super feminine.”

Will.i.am recounted how growing up in the 1990s brought its share of challenges, particularly regarding societal perceptions. He revealed that many people questioned his sexuality due to his feminine demeanor. “In the 1990s, we didn’t have the support in the LGBT community like we do now,” he explained. “A lot of people would question if I was gay because I was feminine.”

Despite the scrutiny, Will.i.am has come to embrace his feminine side, considering it a strength. “I’m still feminine. I sit where I sit. I act the way I act. My mannerisms are my mom’s,” he noted. He added, “I’m strong with my femininity. I think it’s a superpower. When you know who you are, when you love who you are, that’s what it’s about.” Moreover, he is clear about his attractions, stating, “I like girls. I never was attracted to men. I’m attracted to females, but I’m feminine.”
