Elle Macpherson, 60, Reveals Struggles with Alcoholism and Vodka Abuse

Elle Macpherson Opens Up About Struggle with Alcoholism in New Memoir

Elle Macpherson is candidly sharing her battle with alcoholism in her newly released memoir, titled “elle: Life, Lessons & Learning to Trust Yourself.” The supermodel, now 60, has revealed that her hidden struggle with vodka and the resulting consequences were deeply woven into her everyday existence.

In the memoir, Macpherson reflects on how her external glamour masked an internal turmoil. Despite appearing successful and composed to the world, she was privately grappling with significant challenges. “On the outside, I was doing a beautiful job, but deep down inside, I was really struggling,” she writes.

The seasoned model recalls that even after giving birth to her youngest son, Cy, now 21, her thoughts were preoccupied with alcohol. She vividly remembers the moment her newborn was welcomed home, with champagne awaiting in an ice bucket, saying it became an overwhelming temptation.

Macpherson’s revelations include dark moments of isolation as she turned to vodka after putting her children to bed. The routine involved taking shots alone while writing to-do lists and letters to loved ones. “I would listen to music until late at night, then go to sleep and often pass out,” she admits. Her attempts to manage her drinking extended to purging, ensuring she vomited three times each time before going to bed, highlighting the severity of her condition.

Her struggles unfolded amidst her relationship with French financier Arpad ‘Arki’ Busson, where she felt compelled to prove her capability as both a fun partner and a devoted mother. “It became a constant repeat: I was in a horrible downward spiral,” Macpherson recounts, emphasizing the toll her drinking took on her personal life.

The memoir candidly lays bare the frequent blackouts that disturbed her life, making simple conversations feel disjointed and confusing. The supermodel explains that her binge drinking was an ill-fated attempt to regain control over her life and find tranquility within.

While Macpherson’s memoir sheds light on her past struggles with alcohol, she indicates that she never fully concealed her issues. During a recent radio interview, she expressed, “I didn’t keep it hidden; it was just a function of my life.” For her, the act of drinking and the subsequent purging were misguided efforts to manage outside pressures and find inner peace.

With her memoir, Elle Macpherson bravely opens a dialogue about the challenges of addiction, hoping to inspire others who may be facing similar battles.
