Donald Trump Urges Gavin Newsom to Step Down Amid Escalating Wildfires
Donald Trump has publicly called for California Governor Gavin Newsom to resign as the wildfires continue to wreak havoc across Los Angeles County. The president-elect took to Truth Social to lash out against Newsom, attributing the devastating fires to the governor’s failure to act decisively.
As the flames spread for a third consecutive day, Trump did not hold back in his criticism. He accused Newsom of being responsible for the catastrophe, exclaiming, “This is all his fault!” The dire conditions have been exacerbated by severe drought and powerful Santa Ana winds, which have hindered firefighting efforts.
The Easton and Palisades fires erupted on January 7, prompting urgent responses from local officials, including a meeting with President Biden to discuss containment strategies. While the situation intensified, Trump focused his ire on Newsom, using a derogatory nickname, “Newscum,” in his commentary.
In his post, Trump claimed that Newsom had declined to sign a crucial water restoration declaration that could have allocated millions of gallons of water to the affected areas. He suggested that Newsom prioritized the protection of a minor fish species, the smelt, over the safety of California residents. “Now the ultimate price is being paid,” Trump stated.
As the wildfires continued to rage, Trump reiterated his demand for Newsom to allow “beautiful, clean, fresh water” to flow into California to mitigate the crisis. He lamented the lack of water available for fire hydrants and firefighting aircraft, describing the situation as a true disaster.
Despite attending the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter in Washington D.C., Trump’s focus remained on critiquing Newsom’s leadership. In another posting, he lamented, “One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States of America is burning down to the ground.” He insisted on Newsom’s resignation, emphasizing that the catastrophe was due to the governor’s incompetence.
Trump’s remarks included a dig at Mayor Karen Bass, as he highlighted what he perceived as gross negligence in handling the growing disaster. He even suggested that FEMA’s financial resources were mismanaged, attributing the blame to Biden’s administration, despite the fact that FEMA funding is decided by Congress.
As containment efforts remained at zero percent for the Easton and Palisades fires, Trump’s criticisms underscore a growing political battle amidst a natural disaster that has left many Californians reeling.
