Tragic news has emerged as former child star Rory Sykes has lost his life at the age of 32 due to the devastating California fires. Known for his role on the British children’s program Kiddy Kapers, Rory’s mother, Shelley Sykes, shared the heartbreaking announcement on January 9, revealing that he was one of the victims of the wildfire.

In an emotional post on social media, Shelley wrote, “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son Rory to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heartbroken.” She described Rory as a “British born Australian living in America,” who was born on July 29, 1992, a date shared with his grandmother.

Despite facing significant challenges in life, including being born blind with cerebral palsy, Rory fought bravely and overcame many obstacles. Shelley recounted how surgeries and extensive therapy helped him regain his sight and learn to walk. She poignant added that Rory had a home on their expansive Mount Malibu estate, which was equipped with the latest technology, but tragically, it was consumed by the flames when the fire swept through.

Shelley recounted the harrowing moment during the fire when she was unable to reach Rory. She stated that she could not extinguish the embers on his roof due to the lack of water, which was turned off by local authorities. Desperate to save her son, Shelley attempted to call for help but found that phone lines were down. In tears, she shared that Rory pleaded with her to leave, a request no mother could accept.

After driving to a nearby fire station seeking assistance, Shelley returned only to see that Rory’s cottage had already burned to the ground. It was later revealed that he succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning, a detail that brought her a measure of solace, as she wished for him to experience no pain.

The wildfires raging across California since January 7 have displaced many residents, including several notable figures in the entertainment industry. Stars like Paris Hilton and Mandy Moore have also reported losing their homes. Actor Cary Elwes expressed his gratitude for his family’s safety despite losing their home, thanking first responders for their tireless efforts amidst the chaos.

Rory’s passing is a profound loss for his family, his online followers, and his beloved pets. Shelley emphasized the impact of his loss, sharing the sentiment that he would be “so missed” by all who knew him.
