‘Scamanda’ Series Reveals Deceptive Cancer Scheme

ABC is set to launch its much-anticipated docuseries, Scamanda, which delves into the astonishing true story of Amanda Riley and her fabricated battle against cancer. Following the success of the Scamanda podcast released in May 2023, this series promises to take a deeper dive into the shocking revelations surrounding Riley, who captivated thousands with her blog detailing her supposed struggles with stage 3 blood cancer.

On the surface, Amanda appeared to be an ordinary mother and devoted Christian, but everything changed when investigative producer Nancy Moscatiello received an anonymous tip-off that sparked her investigation. The official synopsis hints at the unraveling of Riley’s narrative, suggesting that her own words may lead to her downfall.

The teaser trailer for Scamanda showcases interviews with those who initially supported Riley, describing her as “a beloved young Christian woman fighting a battle undeserved.” However, as the trailer unfolds, it reveals the painful realization that Riley’s claims were fabricated. One contributor notes that “thousands of people threw money at her,” while another reveals that her loved ones raised a staggering $100,000 for fake medical treatments.

Intriguingly, Amanda Riley’s deception went beyond mere lies; it constituted a criminal act. After fraudulently soliciting donations for medical expenses that were nonexistent, she ultimately pleaded guilty to wire fraud in 2021. Her sentence includes five years in prison.

Moscatiello, who played a crucial role in uncovering Riley’s deception, not only served as an executive producer for the Scamanda podcast but is also featured in the series. The docuseries aims to differentiate itself by incorporating new interviews, including insights from a neuropsychologist who explores the psychology behind such scams, as well as law enforcement officials and IRS investigators involved in the case. The series will also include correspondence between Riley and the podcast’s host, Charlie Webster, along with materials collected during Moscatiello’s investigation.

Riley is married to Cory Riley and shares two sons, whom she affectionately called “miracles,” falsely claiming that her cancer treatment should have precluded her from having healthy children. As of now, Cory has not faced any legal repercussions linked to Amanda’s fraudulent activities.

The blog that once captivated many with its tales of her cancer journey, titled “Lymphoma Can Suck It,” has since been taken down and is no longer accessible online. Amanda wrote on this platform from 2012 until 2019, prior to the charges against her in 2020.

So when can viewers tune in to this gripping tale? Scamanda is scheduled to premiere on ABC on Wednesday, October 16, at 10 p.m. ET, with new episodes airing weekly. For those who prefer streaming, episodes will be available on Hulu the day after their broadcast.
