Roman Kemp’s father Martin has expressed his concerns over the potential impact of his son’s mental health advocacy efforts. Roman, a well-known TV presenter, has been candid about his own mental health challenges, sharing his story in the 2021 documentary “Our Silent Emergency,” where he revealed he had faced suicidal thoughts in the past. This documentary also touched on the trauma he experienced following the tragic death of his close friend Joe Lyons in 2020, who died by suicide.

Since then, Roman has placed a strong emphasis on encouraging young people to openly discuss their mental health. However, during a recent episode of their podcast, Martin opened up about his worries for Roman as he navigates this challenging terrain.

Martin, who has his own background in acting, articulated his fears regarding the weight of Roman’s advocacy work. “I worry about you doing this, I worry about it. Because I know that, from being an actor, that when you convince yourself and talk about things so much, it can take a toll on your psychological health,” he said. He acknowledged the importance of Roman’s work but highlighted the potential emotional repercussions it could have on him.

In response, Roman shared that confronting his feelings and experiences has been beneficial for him. “Reliving the trauma actually helps me. The more I talk about it, the more it dilutes the story, and you become semi-detached,” he explained. He sees his journey as a way to frame his past and foster understanding about his experiences.

Roman has been a strong advocate for mental health education, emphasizing that conversations about these issues should begin early in a child’s education. “Talking about mental health needs to start earlier than when we get to 16 and we’re doing PSHE. It has to be engrained into lessons and schools as early as possible,” he stated in a previous interview.

In another candid revelation, he discussed his personal battle with depression, noting he has been on antidepressants for 15 years and stressing the importance of open dialogue about mental health, as those discussions can truly save lives.

As they navigate this journey together, both father and son are deeply committed to raising awareness and fostering understanding around mental health issues. What are your thoughts on this touching story? Feel free to share your opinions with us on social media.
