Tom Selleck Opens Up About the End of Blue Bloods: ‘Frustrating’ and ‘Impossible’
In an emotional reveal, Tom Selleck, the beloved star of Blue Bloods, has voiced his deep disappointment over the series coming to a close. As CBS confirmed that Season 14 would be the show’s final season, Selleck candidly shared his feelings about the endgame of a program that has resonated with fans for years.
In an interview with TV Insider, Tom expressed his frustration. “I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I wanted to focus on the show’s success rather than discussing its end,” he stated. “Earning a spot in the Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 is no small feat—we ranked number 9 overall. Without counting the three football programs, we stand strong at number 6. To get significant ratings in a challenging timeslot for 15 years is almost unbelievable.”
Selleck went on to discuss how he feels the show has often been taken for granted due to its steady performance from the start. “It’s going to take a long time to process all of this,” he lamented. Reflecting on the days following the final episode’s shoot, he revealed, “I recall thinking about preparing for my dialogue on Monday, only to realize there wouldn’t be a Monday. It’s surreal.”
One of the hardest aspects of saying goodbye to Blue Bloods, which he worked on for over a decade, is the bond he formed with his fellow cast members. “I will miss the actors the most. Our connection is as close as the Reagan family’s on-screen dynamic,” Tom said. “Everyone wanted to return for the finale. It’s rare for a show to end with such camaraderie—there’s typically a lot of backstage drama, but we managed to rise above that. It’s something to take pride in.”
Selleck also looked towards the future of broadcast television, hopeful for its evolution despite the challenges it faces. “I’ve always had faith that broadcast television would thrive. It seems to have been sidelined, but I truly believe there’s a strong audience that prefers not to spend excessive time searching for content.”
On a more personal note, he touched on how the series’ cancellation might impact his life, particularly regarding his 63-acre ranch in Ventura County, California. “I’m optimistic that I’ll land enough jobs to maintain the place,” he mentioned. “While I’m comfortable, the expense of a 63-acre ranch is significant. Stopping work would certainly change things.”
In the wake of Blue Bloods concluding, Selleck’s reflections offer a poignant glimpse into his experience, illustrating both the trials of saying farewell and his unwavering passion for the craft.
