Ted Danson Issues Apology to Kelsey Grammer Over Tensions During Cheers
In a recent episode of his SiriusXM podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Ted Danson took the opportunity to apologize to fellow actor Kelsey Grammer for a disagreement that occurred while filming the iconic sitcom Cheers. During the October 23 episode, which featured Grammer as a guest, Danson reflected on their time together on the show.
“I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the Cheers years,” Danson, 76, expressed to Grammer, 69. “I remember getting angry at you once.”
In response, Grammer acknowledged the memory, sharing, “Yeah, you came and told me that one day.”
Danson went on to elaborate, “But I feel like, I don’t know. I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer, and I feel like that’s my bad. I almost feel like apologizing to you.” He reiterated his sentiment, stating, “I really do apologize.”
The two actors reminisced about their time on the show, with Grammer recalling a memorable line that Danson once told him: “When I turned 40, you came up and you said, ‘You know what it means, don’t you? Now that you’re 40, it means you’re finally worth having a conversation with.’” Grammer praised the remark, saying, “That was brilliant. I always loved that. I’ve repeated it.”
Cheers, which aired on NBC from 1983 to 1993, showcased Danson as the charming bartender Sam Malone and featured Grammer as Frasier Crane, a character who became pivotal to the series’ storyline. Danson earned two Emmy Awards for his performance, while Grammer went on to secure four Emmys through his portrayal of Frasier, a character he later revived in a new series on Paramount’s streaming platform.
Reflecting on their professional bond, Grammer noted the importance of their shared experiences, stating, “You can go off in different directions, have different lives, but that bond of making something really funny and good—that love lasts.” Danson echoed these sentiments, paying homage to Cheers director Jimmy Burrows, whom he described as “like my daddy in show business.”
As fans continue to celebrate the legacy of Cheers, Danson hinted at the possibility of a reunion, especially after several cast members recently shared the stage at the Emmys. Both actors remain fond of the connections they formed during their time on the show, emphasizing the lasting impact it has had on their lives and careers.
