In a recent revelation, actor Paul Mescal, known for his engaging performances, opened up about his intense preparation for the upcoming film Gladiator II. Speaking on the Graham Norton Show, which premiered on October 25 on BBC One, the 28-year-old actor shared insights into his physical transformation for the highly anticipated sequel.

Mescal detailed his rigorous training regimen, which included a heavy focus on diet and strength training. “I ate a lot of chicken and lifted heavy weights,” he explained, highlighting the efforts that went into getting into shape for the role. He worked closely with a personal trainer, who was described by Mescal as being very intense, declaring, “There is a canvas to work with.” Mescal noted that it was an enjoyable experience, meeting with his trainer daily to refine his physique.

Despite the demanding physical discipline required for the production, Mescal conveyed his determination not to compromise on some personal indulgences. When asked about sacrifices for the role, he admitted, “I did everything he asked but I like to drink, and I like to smoke, so I drew a line in the sand with those.” This candid remark underlines his commitment to balance personal enjoyment with the demands of his profession.

Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, continues the narrative set forth in the iconic 2000 film that starred Russell Crowe. The sequel is set more than two decades after the original events, with Mescal portraying Lucius Verus, the son of Crowe’s character Maximus. In a dramatic twist reminiscent of Maximus’ journey, Lucius faces enslavement and struggles for his freedom in the gladiatorial arena.

Reflecting on the audition process, Mescal recounted how he secured his role through a brief yet impactful Zoom meeting with Scott. Expecting a lengthy audition filled with camera tests, he was taken by surprise when their 30-minute conversation revolved as much around personal topics—like Gaelic football and Scott’s dog—as it did about the role itself. “I thought there would be more,” Mescal shared, expressing gratitude for the directness of the process.

This Friday, Mescal will appear alongside Denzel Washington, who plays his mentor Macrinus in Gladiator II. The actor also shared the nerves he felt upon meeting the Oscar-winning star during filming, confessing he hesitated to introduce himself for a time before finally mustering the courage to do so.

As Gladiator II gears up for its release on November 22, excitement is palpable among fans eager to see how this storied franchise expands its legacy through the eyes of a new generation.
