Neil Patrick Harris Praises Darren Criss, Calls Him ‘Part Robot’
In a recent chat with Us Weekly, Neil Patrick Harris showered praise on fellow actor Darren Criss, humorously labeling him as “part robot.” The two engaged in this conversation on November 11 at the pre-opening of the musical Maybe Happy Ending in New York City, an event that Harris described as quite the spectacle.
According to Harris, “Darren’s talent is always on display. It’s impossible to witness an off night with him.” His comments reflect not just admiration but also a playful nod to Criss’ character in the upcoming musical production, which premiered to audiences the following night. Harris elaborated by saying, “He embodies the qualities of a thoroughbred. He consistently represents himself remarkably well.”
Over the years, the career paths of Harris and Criss have often intersected. Harris originally starred as Hedwig in the acclaimed Broadway production Hedwig and the Angry Inch, earning a Tony Award in 2014 for Best Performance in a Leading Role before Criss took over the character in 2015. Both actors also made appearances in the beloved series Glee, although not concurrently. Harris appeared in Season 1, while Criss became a standout as Blaine Anderson in Season 2, remaining with the show for five seasons.
Joining the festivities was David Burtka, Harris’ husband and fellow performer, who came out to support Criss, a fellow University of Michigan alumnus. Burtka expressed his excitement for Criss’s performance and remarked, “Darren and I share a college connection, so it’s gratifying to back him in this way.” Harris chimed in with a cheerful, “Go Blue!”
In addition to supporting Criss, Burtka is gearing up for his own cabaret comeback after a 12-year break with his new show, Burtka, David, which is set to premiere on November 20 at 54 Below. Harris is taking on a directing role for the production while also appearing in the off-Broadway show S—. Meet. Fan. at the MCC Theatre. Burtka candidly discussed his journey, noting that the show delves into personal challenges he once shied away from discussing. “It’s humorous yet touches on topics I needed the bravery to confront years ago,” he mentioned, adding that their children will also be part of the performance.
Reflecting on their family life, Harris praised Burtka’s dedication, saying, “I cannot imagine a bigger champion for David than myself. I’ve seen him consistently prioritize our family while being an incredible dad and partner.” He reaffirmed his commitment to support Burtka in every artistic endeavor.
As for Darren Criss, he continues to be a powerful presence on stage, having earned accolades like an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his gripping portrayal of Andrew Cunanan in Ryan Murphy’s anthology series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. His theatrical portfolio includes notable performances in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, American Buffalo, and Little Shop of Horrors.
The newly unveiled Maybe Happy Ending is an original South Korean musical comedy, with an engaging score by Will Aronson and lyrics by Hue Park. As the curtains rise on this new production, anticipation is mounting for what audiences can expect.
