After the divorce of his parents when he was 16, Josh moved to Los Angeles to live with his father, having spent his earlier years on a ranch in Paso Robles and later in Santa Barbara.

Despite his high-profile family connections, Brolin, now 56, firmly distances himself from the term “nepo baby.” He expressed that early in his career, the response to his familial ties was often negative. He noted, “When I started it was kind of like, ‘Oh, you’re Brolin’s son,’ but not positively. This whole nepotism discussion was prevalent, and there were definitely folks rooting against me.”

Josh reminisced about landing a role in the beloved classic The Goonies back in 1984, calling it a serendipitous moment that he felt should never have materialized. He recalled feeling out of place on set, surrounded by seasoned actors like Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan, which led to significant nerves on his part. “I was just a fish out of water, trying to keep my anxiety at bay,” he said, admitting that he initially ruined the first half-day of filming due to his laughter.

Reflecting on his commitment to sobriety for over a decade, Brolin shared the transformative impact it has had on his life. “I genuinely love being sober. It brings more joy and clarity,” he stated, emphasizing that he believes all challenges he faces would be exacerbated if he were to return to drinking. He recalled a particularly candid moment with his stepmother, Barbra Streisand, who pointedly questioned his drinking habits when he asked for a glass of wine at their home. Brolin appreciated the straightforwardness, noting that he values honesty above all else in any relationship.
