Katie Couric Shares Thoughts on Craig Melvin Taking Over Hoda Kotb’s Spot on ‘Today’
Katie Couric, the celebrated former co-host of ‘Today,’ has expressed her support for Craig Melvin, who is stepping into Hoda Kotb’s role after her upcoming departure from the show. At a charity event on November 16, Couric elaborated on Kotb’s choice to leave the show in January 2025, paving the way for Melvin’s promotion.
Couric remarked on Kotb’s decision, indicating her understanding of Hoda’s need to prioritize her children. “I adore Hoda, and I believe the audience does too,” Couric, 67, stated. With years of experience on the show, Couric knows the challenges of balancing personal and professional life. “Like anyone in the industry, you seek fresh challenges. I did it for 15 years and loved it, but I was ready for the next chapter. I think Hoda is ready too.”
In discussing Craig Melvin, 45, Couric shared her enthusiasm for his new role. “He is well-known and well-liked by the audience, which will make for a smooth transition,” she observed. She believes Melvin will navigate the change seamlessly, adding, “Transitions can be tricky, but he’s poised to hit the ground running. The show is going to keep improving.”
Couric also expressed her excitement for Hoda, who she believes deserves time with her daughters. “Hoda has been dedicated to her career for a long time. She wants to be there for her girls, making breakfast and taking them to school,” Couric noted, recognizing Hoda’s challenges as a single parent, even while co-parenting.
Additionally, Couric highlighted that Kotb will still have opportunities to engage with her fans in a changing media landscape. “There are numerous ways to maintain a connection with viewers now, and I’m thrilled for Hoda as she explores these new avenues.”
Though Kotb announced her exit in late September, she emphasized her decision was focused on motherhood. However, reports surfaced suggesting that financial factors, including a potential salary cut from her $20 million annual salary, played a role.
In response to her decision, Kotb praised Melvin, saying, “You were made for this job. You possess everything needed for this role.” Melvin, who described the promotion as an “incredible blessing,” expressed gratitude that his parents are healthy enough to witness this next step in his career.
This transition marks a significant moment for ‘Today,’ and fans are eager to see how it all unfolds.
