Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Emotions and Mortality in Candid Interview

Nicole Kidman, the acclaimed actress known for her powerful performances, recently spoke openly about the weight of mortality and the depth of her emotions in an interview with GQ. At 57 years old, Kidman reflects on how her perceptions have evolved as she embraced her 50s, allowing her feelings to surface rather than suppressing them.

In the interview published on November 18, Kidman expressed that she feels more aware of her mortality, the importance of connections, and the various responsibilities that come with life, such as parenting and marriage. “Mortality. Connection. Life coming and hitting you,” she shared, touching on the myriad experiences that make life rich and challenging. For Kidman, who has four children—Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13, with husband Keith Urban, as well as Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, from her marriage to Tom Cruise—these reflections are poignant.

In her words, these feelings can strike suddenly, creating moments of vulnerability that come with age: “It’s a wake up at 3 a.m. crying and gasping kind of thing,” she described. Kidman is determined to engage fully with her emotions instead of numbing herself to them.

The recent passing of her mother, Janelle, at the age of 84, has further intensified Kidman’s feelings of loss and grief. After hearing the tragic news while attending the Venice International Film Festival, she took immediate action to return home. “I am in shock and I have to go to my family,” she stated during the festival when accepting an award, dedicating it to her mother and reinforcing the impact her mother had on her life.

Dealing with this deep loss has not been easy for Kidman. During a recent event for the premiere of Lioness season 2, she opened up about her ongoing struggle with grief: “It’s been hard. It’s a hard road. I’m hanging in there.”

Despite her success in Hollywood, Kidman often reflects on how bittersweet milestones feel without her mother’s presence. “I wish my mama was here,” she voiced, conveying a universal sentiment of longing for loved ones who are no longer with us, especially during significant moments.

Through her candid remarks, Nicole Kidman is reminding us all of the importance of embracing our emotions, facing the realities of life, and cherishing the connections we have with those we hold dear.
