Jude Law spills the beans on the iconic Rosehill Cottage from the beloved holiday film The Holiday, revealing a surprising twist that might dampen some Christmas cheer. In a recent chat with BBC Radio, the actor discussed the film classic when asked about the picturesque cottage where Cameron Diaz’s character finds solace. Contrary to popular belief, Law disclosed that the charming abode doesn’t actually exist; it was merely a set piece constructed in a field for the film.
“The cottage doesn’t exist,” Law admitted, leaving host Zoe Ball startled, especially since she had fancied booking it on Airbnb. He explained that director Nancy Meyers, known for her perfectionism, searched extensively for a quaint cottage but ultimately decided to create one instead. “She just hired a field and had someone build it,” he said.
While the enchanting exterior is a product of Hollywood ingenuity, the cozy interiors were filmed at Honeysuckle Cottage, located in Holmbury St Mary, England, and yes, it’s available to rent on Airbnb. This quintessentially English retreat, dusted in snow, features charming details like faded chintz, wooden beams, and a cozy fireplace.
Law portrayed the single father Graham Simpkins in the film, who falls for Diaz’s character during her stay at the cottage. He also shed light on an interesting tidbit about the changing tan he sports throughout the movie. The production began shooting outdoor scenes during winter, then transitioned to summer for the interior shots. “We were shooting it in the winter here in England, and every time I’d go through that door, we changed to filming interiors in LA,” he explained.
As Law playfully put it, he just wanted to “burst the bubble” for fans. Will this revelation change how viewers enjoy the film? Time will tell.
