Peter Nygård, a former fashion executive and friend of Prince Andrew, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting four women.
Superior Court Justice Robert Goldstein condemned Nygård as a “sexual predator” and a “Canadian success story gone very wrong.” Although sentenced to 11 years, Nygård will serve only seven, as his time already spent in custody is counted toward his sentence.
Nygård, 83, was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault following a six-week trial in November 2023. Despite his plea of not guilty to charges related to incidents from the 1980s through the 2000s, the court convicted him based on evidence presented by his victims. The victims described him as a “monster” who refused to accept “no” for an answer.
The former fashion mogul reportedly lured his victims under the pretense of job interviews, promising opportunities in the fashion industry. He met them in various settings, such as on a plane, at a nightclub, and at an airport, before taking them to his office and then to his bedroom, where all encounters ended in non-consensual sexual acts.
During the trial, Nygård claimed he could not recall four of his five accusers and denied engaging in the alleged behaviors. The jury acquitted him on one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement, the latter of which involved accusations that he had prevented one accuser from leaving his private suite.
Victims described feeling trapped and unsafe, with some detailing that doors in his suite required a keypad or a button by the bed to open.
Attorney Lisa Haba, representing nearly 60 women suing Nygård in the U.S., likened him to Jeffrey Epstein, stating, “Nygård is worse than Epstein.” She highlighted a 2020 civil lawsuit alleging that Nygård operated a sex-trafficking ring at his Caribbean mansion, with victims as young as 14.
Haba emphasized that despite Nygård’s sentence, many victims have yet to come forward, and she vowed to continue seeking justice for them.
