‘SNL’ Shake-Up: New Cast Members Join for 50th Season Amid Criticism of ‘Unfunny’ and ‘Woke’ Show
Saturday Night Live has weathered countless controversies and missteps over its 49-season run, but recent criticism has put its legacy in jeopardy.
Sydtomarket.net has learned that the iconic late-night comedy sketch show has faced backlash from viewers who have labeled it “unfunny” and “woke,” leading showrunners to revamp the cast in an effort to reclaim its audience.
As SNL gears up for its landmark 50th season, three new cast members have been introduced to refresh the lineup.
The show, which premieres on September 28, has long been a cultural touchstone, helping to launch the careers of many renowned comedians, including Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Jimmy Fallon, and Kristen Wiig.
However, recent seasons have struggled with declining viewership as fans criticize the show’s shift from its original humor to a more politically correct approach.
On X, one viewer lamented, “SNL is so painfully unfunny, anyone with me?” Another user agreed, saying, “It used to be good but I fear it’s just not as funny anymore.”
Another user nostalgically posted a photo of Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna, adding, “I miss the humor from this era,” prompting responses like, “Yes! SNL has SUCKED now for over a decade and is completely WOKE now too! It’s unwatchable!”
In response to the criticism, NBC has decided to bring in new talent, replacing some veteran cast members with Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim, and Jane Wickline for Season 50. Padilla has been involved with L.A.’s Groundlings and appeared on *Curb Your Enthusiasm*, Wakim has done stand-up on *The Tonight Show*, and Wickline is known for her work with TikTok ensemble Stapleview.
The cast shake-up follows the exits of Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney, and a recent announcement from Chloe Troast that she would not be returning this season. Troast shared on Instagram, “Unfortunately I was not asked back to SNL this season. I wish I was going back to be with all the amazing friends I made there; it truly felt like home. But it wasn’t in the cards.”
Additionally, featured cast members Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow, and Devon Walker have been promoted to the main cast. Maya Rudolph is also expected to return, bringing back her popular impression of Vice President Kamala Harris in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election.
The milestone 50th season will be celebrated with a special three-hour episode scheduled for February 16, 2025.
