In Switzerland, a unique commuting trend is making waves—literally. Imagine floating down a beautiful, scenic river to get to work. Sounds amazing, right? Recently, Diplo, the well-known DJ and producer, sparked excitement on TikTok after showcasing this unconventional method of commuting while in Basel, Switzerland.
In his viral video, Diplo captured the essence of this unusual commute, where locals can be seen leisurely drifting along the Rhine River. He shared with followers that many people utilize the river for their daily travels, expressing his envy of the experience. In summer, the Kleinbasel banks of the Rhine turn into a popular hotspot where one can toss their belongings into a special swim bag called a “Wickelfisch” and let the current do the rest.
But Basel isn’t the only place showcasing this trend. The Aare River in Bern, the charming capital of Switzerland, attracts thousands during the summer season. The river’s glacial waters provide a picturesque route for both locals and tourists alike, allowing them to float effortlessly to designated spots marked by red bars.
Eager to join in on the fun, Diplo set a goal for his adventure. He planned to run a distance of 5 kilometers, find a dry bag, and ultimately make his way back to his hotel by floating down the river. After a quick run, he paused to observe others casually floating by before seeking out the necessary dry bags.
After finding the merchandise in a shop he humorously likened to a Swiss version of Target, Diplo was ready for his river journey. Equipped with his Wickelfisch bag tightly sealed, he entered the water and began to float. His expressions of joy and excitement were evident as he drifted along the river.
He later declared, “This is the only way I’m commuting now,” capturing how refreshing and enjoyable this alternative travel option can be. Float commuting may just be the new trend, and it certainly makes us wonder—would you take the plunge? Share your thoughts in the comments.
