Colton’s grandfather, Charles Polhamu, shared that his daughter, Marcee Gray, received a text on Wednesday, September 4, that read, “I’m sorry, mom.” Following this unsettling message, Marcee’s sister, Annie Brown, recounted to The Washington Post that Marcee contacted the school counselor, describing the situation as an “extreme emergency” and urging immediate action to locate her son.

Despite the school’s efforts to find Colton, he was not in his classroom. Meanwhile, Marcee, overwhelmed with worry, drove three hours to Winder, only to be informed of the fatalities before reaching her destination. “It’s horrible. It’s absolutely horrible,” Marcee told The New York Post in a statement.

In a shocking legal twist, Colton’s father, Colin Gray, has also been charged for allegedly providing the AR-15-style weapon used in the shooting. This weapon was involved in the deaths of students Mason Schermerhorn, 14, Christian Angulo, 14, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie.

Charles Polhamu expressed his deep anger towards Colin Gray, saying, “Colin Gray did this to his family and he will rot in hell for it. That’s a fact. He needs the death penalty. He is probably one of the worst narcissists in the world.” Charles attributed much of the blame for Colton’s actions to his father, despite not excusing Colton’s alleged behavior. “He was a good kid turned bad in a bad situation. It’s sad. An environment that a kid grows up in has everything to do with their personality and what they become,” Charles explained, referring to his daughter’s former partner, with whom she separated last year.

Charles also highlighted the severe impact of their circumstances, noting that the family had lost their home and business. “Living in that environment – they lost their house, he lost his job,” he said. “Two years he laid on his back and never did a thing. My daughter Marcee worked. They had a half-million-dollar farm before all this happened and they lost it.”

Charles was emphatic that Marcee bore no responsibility for Colton’s actions. “Zero on Marcee. Marcee never did anything to Colt. All she did is help him out,” he clarified. He further emphasized that Colton’s actions were a result of his environment, not a sudden decision to commit such a heinous act. “If you step in a wad of s—, what happens to your foot? You step in a wad of s—. This is no different. To live in that for 11 years, my daughter and her children,” Charles added.
