Craig Melvin Kicks Off His First Day as Hoda Kotb’s Successor on Today

Craig Melvin made his debut as the new co-host on NBC’s Today show, stepping into the role previously held by Hoda Kotb. On January 13, 2025, the seasoned broadcaster joined Savannah Guthrie at the news desk for a special episode marking the beginning of this new chapter. As viewers tuned in, the excitement was palpable in the studio.

“Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Today on this very significant Monday morning,” Savannah announced, her expression lighting up as the show began. With a playful nod to their show’s tradition, she added, “I don’t know if I really heard that and absorbed it. We have a tradition here at the Today show…” as the announcer repeated Craig’s name for emphasis.

Craig, clearly excited, responded, “That’s special.” Savannah acknowledged his familiarity with the show, saying, “You’ve sat there so many times, but this morning is special.” Both hosts expressed their enthusiasm for the journey ahead, highlighting the camaraderie that exists between them.

In a heartfelt moment, Craig reflected on his new position, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. “I am beyond excited and grateful,” he shared, emphasizing the significance of this promotion in his career. He acknowledged the support from his colleagues at NBC, noting the outpouring of applause from the staff when the news was announced.

As Hoda departed after 17 years with the show, she shifted her focus towards family life, particularly her daughters, Haley and Hope. In light of her departure, Craig shared sincere words about the impact Hoda had during her tenure. “I want people to know, I didn’t have sisters, but you guys are the sisters that I never knew that I needed,” he said, cherishing the bond he developed with both Hoda and Savannah.

Hoda’s last episode on January 10 was a memorable occasion filled with emotion, featuring surprise visits from celebrity guests, including Today alum Kathie Lee Gifford. The farewell was a bittersweet moment, with Hoda expressing gratitude amidst tears, stating, “Can I just say thank you? I haven’t been able to articulate it, because I’m a mess most times, but I just want to say thanks.”

As Craig Melvin embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career, viewers eagerly anticipate the fresh perspective he will bring to the beloved morning program.
