Dancing On Ice executives are reportedly feeling anxious following a series of injuries sustained by Sir Steve Redgrave during rehearsals. The Olympic rowing icon is set to make his skating debut next weekend on Sunday, January 19.
The renowned athlete, who achieved remarkable success, winning gold medals at five Olympic Games, has been candid about the challenges he has faced during training for the popular ITV program. Sir Steve, aged 62, has encountered a range of health issues and injuries that have complicated his journey on the ice.
He recently shared with The Sun that his physical condition, coupled with unfortunate training mishaps, has made this experience particularly tough. “I have colitis, I’m diabetic, and I also deal with a frozen shoulder. On the third day of training, I fell, aggravating my shoulder, and I also pulled a hip flexor. All of this happened in just a few weeks,” he explained.
Sir Steve continued to elaborate on the concerns of the production team. “The production team has been quite nervous, feeling the need to protect me as best as they can. They keep saying, ‘We need to ensure he makes it to the show.’ And here we are, gearing up for the start,” he revealed.
Adding to the physical challenges, he mentioned having difficulty with sensation in his feet and a lack of flexibility in his hands. Despite these odds, the former Olympian expresses a wishful thought of potentially winning the competition, stating, “In my wildest dreams—though it has to be a wild dream—I believe I have a shot at winning.”
However, analysts from Grosvenor Sport predict otherwise, placing Sir Steve at the top of the list of contestants likely to be eliminated first, with odds of 33/1 for him clinching victory. In contrast, The Traitors star Mollie Pearce and Coronation Street’s Sam Aston are favored to succeed, both sitting at strong odds of 4/1.
Dancing On Ice is set to premiere tonight, Sunday, January 12, at 6:30 PM on ITV1 and ITVX. Fans can share their thoughts about the show and follow updates on the event.
