Denzel Washington Sets the Record Straight on Retirement Claims
Denzel Washington is not closing the curtain on his illustrious career just yet. The acclaimed actor stirred up quite a buzz recently when, during an interview with Australia’s Today show, he seemed to suggest that he would be stepping away from acting. However, he now explains that his retirement statements have been misinterpreted.
Washington was promoting his upcoming film, Gladiator II, and during the conversation, he shared details about a series of future projects, including Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated Black Panther 3. He remarked that at this stage of his life, the filmmakers he collaborates with matter greatly. “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make — probably not that many,” he stated.
Denzel reflected on his acting journey and future roles, including taking on Othello once again, as well as plans for Hannibal and King Lear. His statements about retirement seemed somewhat abrupt, leading to widespread speculation in Hollywood.
However, during a follow-up with BuzzFeed’s Ada Enechi, Denzel clarified his stance. “I didn’t say I was going to retire,” he remarked. He expressed a desire for meaningful projects rather than simply retiring from the industry. “I’m more interested in getting behind the camera, so that’s about five years out.”
He elaborated on his thoughts about life’s stages, categorizing them into learning, earning, and returning. Currently, he believes he is in the “return” stage of his life, with a focus on nurturing the next generation in film.
His recent press tour for the family-backed adaptation of The Piano Lesson, featuring his son Malcolm in his directorial debut, provided Denzel with a fresh perspective. He proudly acknowledges the new generation taking the reins in Hollywood, including his son John David and the involvement of his daughter Katia as an executive producer on their project.
“I’m not retiring,” Denzel assured fans, indicating that he won’t be disappearing from the screen entirely. He acknowledged the limitations that come with age, saying, “I’d be a fool to think I can run as far as they can.” He emphasized that he is less interested in physically demanding roles, preferring to let younger actors take on those challenges.
As fans breathe a sigh of relief, Denzel Washington continues to shape his legendary career while supporting his family in the industry. For those eager to hear directly from him, a full version of his interview will be available soon.
