Jurnee Smollett Reflects on Learning Experience from Denzel Washington on Set
Jurnee Smollett recently opened up about a pivotal moment in her acting career when she was challenged by the acclaimed director Denzel Washington. The actress, now 38, shared her experience during an interview with her The Order co-star Jude Law for Us Weekly’s inaugural In Conversation series.
During their discussion, Smollett recalled how Washington’s guidance helped her realize that sometimes being “too prepared” can hinder performance. To illustrate this, she referenced her time filming The Great Debaters back in 2007, one of her early significant film roles as an adult.
Smollett described the anxiety she felt when Washington addressed her performance. She explained that, despite her confidence going into the scene, she ended up feeling “stale” and unprepared. Washington immediately noticed her struggle. “You over-rehearsed,” he told her, and for a moment, she felt lost, responding, “I got nothing. What do I do?”
Despite initially feeling overwhelmed, Washington comfortingly suggested they film her last so she could relax. However, when the moment arrived, Smollett still felt out of sync. “I was freaking out,” she admitted. It wasn’t until Washington approached her with another insightful remark that everything clicked into place: “If you’re gonna ask a question, get an answer.”
This simple but profound advice allowed Smollett to find her footing. She noted how her character, who debated whether people of color should attend certain universities, was deeply personal. “It was like fighting for my life,” she emphasized, which heightened the stakes in that moment. By embracing Washington’s wisdom, she was able to deliver an emotional take that ultimately made it into the final cut of the film.
Reflecting on the support she received, Smollett shared how valuable it is to learn from seasoned professionals like Washington. “Great place to learn at the hands of Denzel Washington,” co-star Jude Law remarked, highlighting the unique opportunity they both had on set.
Their conversation ultimately highlighted the importance of intuition and understanding among filmmakers, especially in a challenging industry. As they discussed their current project The Order, which revolves around FBI agents combating a white supremacist group, both actors acknowledged the need for warmth and generosity behind the scenes.
Now in theaters, The Order showcases not only Smollett and Law’s compelling performances but also the invaluable lessons that emerge when actors and directors unite their talents to create impactful stories.
