Donnie Wahlberg is set to headline a new offshoot of the CBS hit series Blue Bloods, titled Boston Blue. The announcement made waves in February 2025, with fans buzzing about the expansion of the beloved Blue Bloods universe. Wahlberg will reprise his iconic role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan, but this time he’ll be trading the concrete jungles of New York City for the historic streets of Boston.

In a recent press release, CBS outlined the premise for Boston Blue. The story will follow Danny Reagan as he makes a career shift to the Boston Police Department, where he teams up with detective Lena Peters, the daughter of a prominent local law enforcement family. With Donnie’s roots in Boston, the setting feels like a natural fit for this new chapter in his character’s journey.

Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis will serve as executive producers and showrunners, with Wahlberg also taking on the role of executive producer. Notable industry figures Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed have also signed on as executive producers for the new series.

As for the cast, it appears Donnie is the sole member from the original Blue Bloods crew confirmed to return. Prior to this announcement, there had been discussions among the original cast about a potential spinoff, and Abigail Hawk, who played a pivotal role in the series, hinted that any new show would likely not follow the Reagan family or take place in New York.

While fans are eagerly anticipating the premiere, CBS has yet to specify an exact date. The new drama is expected to join the 2025-2026 television lineup, with a straight-to-series order that suggests significant investment from the network. Currently, S.W.A.T. occupies the Friday night 10 p.m. time slot that Blue Bloods previously held, but changes could always happen as the new show approaches its debut.

Social media has been abuzz with reactions to the spinoff news. Fans expressed both excitement for the continuation of the Blue Bloods legacy and confusion surrounding the original show’s cancellation after 14 successful seasons. Some social media users questioned the logic behind shifting to Boston and leaving behind fan-favorite characters.

Regardless of the mixed reactions, one thing is clear: Boston Blue represents a bold new chapter in the Blue Bloods franchise, and viewers are keen to see where this adventure leads.
