Dylan Dreyer Praises Lester Holt as a True Professional Following His Departure from NBC Nightly News
In a heartfelt tribute to Lester Holt, Dylan Dreyer expressed her admiration as he prepares to leave his role as anchor of NBC Nightly News, a position he has held for the last decade. In an Instagram post shared with her followers, the meteorologist fondly recalled her early days in broadcasting, crediting Holt for easing her nerves on her first day at Weekend Today.
“You’d think the most nerve-wracking day of my career was my first day on air at Weekend Today. But @lesterholtnbc made me feel so comfortable from day one,” Dreyer wrote. She praised Holt not only as a colleague but also as a mentor and friend, saying, “It has been a true honor to work and grow alongside him from those days of hurricane coverage, to @nbcnightlynews, and even the fun experiments on @nightlykids. A true professional, an incredible interviewer and anchor, a friend. Congratulations on this next phase of your inspirational career, Lester!”
Holt’s announcement about stepping away from NBC Nightly News came in a memo to NBC staff on February 24. The seasoned journalist explained his decision to focus more on Dateline, a program he has been a part of since 2011. “I’m excited to report I will be continuing as anchor of Dateline NBC, but for the first time in a fulltime capacity. I will be expanding my footprint on the broadcast and crafting Dateline hours on subjects I care deeply about,” he said.
After sharing his plans, Janelle Rodriguez, the EVP of Programming at NBC News, lauded Holt’s significant contributions and leadership. She stated, “Because of Lester’s steady and thoughtful leadership, Nightly News has maintained its status as a trusted news source for millions of viewers across America.” Rodriguez emphasized how Holt has navigated the network through challenging times, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his calming presence became a nightly reassurance for viewers.
Other colleagues from the Today Show joined in to celebrate Holt’s career. Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb reflected on their time working with him. Craig Melvin also shared his respect, highlighting Holt’s integrity and kindness, especially with children. “From the very beginning, @lesterholtnbc has been the gold standard at the peacock, on camera and off. He’s been on the frontlines of so much history and has taken many of us along,” Melvin wrote. “His steady style and even temperament will be sorely missed. Off camera…he’s beloved because he’s so kind, especially to kids.”
As Holt embarks on this new chapter in his career, he leaves behind a legacy of professionalism and compassion at NBC Nightly News, one that will not soon be forgotten.
