Dylan O’Brien Raised Safety Concerns Before Near-Death Maze Runner Stunt Accident

Dylan O’Brien Speaks Out About Safety Concerns Prior to Maze Runner Accident

In a revealing conversation, Dylan O’Brien has brought to light his worries about safety protocols on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure before he faced a life-threatening accident. It was in 2016 when the actor, known for his role as Thomas in the popular sci-fi series, was struck by a vehicle during a stunt, resulting in serious injuries that included a concussion, facial fractures, and traumatic brain injury. His recovery process spanned six months.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Dylan has recounted how the experience reshaped his entire perspective on life and his approach to filming. In a 2017 interview with Vulture, he expressed the emotional toll it took on him, admitting, “I found myself in a dark space for a lengthy period, struggling to envision a return to acting, which was terrifying.”

In his recent interview with Men’s Health, Dylan delves deeper into the ramifications of that fateful day. He emphasizes the importance of advocacy and standing up for oneself on set, a lesson it took him years to internalize. “In this industry, young actors often feel constrained, with a narrative suggesting that any pushback equates to being a nuisance. It’s a delicate balance,” he explained.

O’Brien vividly recalls raising alarms about the stunt’s safety before the incident occurred. “Looking back, I was just a 24-year-old expressing valid concerns, and unfortunately, those were overlooked. The aftermath was dire, and it felt like it was brushed aside,” he shared.

He continues, “Ultimately, you have to safeguard your own interests in these environments. I know my character, my values, and the respect I bring to my work. I wasn’t being difficult; I was merely trying to ensure my safety, and that lesson has never left me.”

Dylan’s bravery in sharing this narrative underscores not only his personal journey but also highlights critical discussions around safety in the high-pressure atmosphere of film sets.
