Elle Macpherson Opens Up About Vodka Incident From Broken Bottle Amid Alcohol Struggles
Elle Macpherson is sharing her journey through alcohol struggles in her latest book, Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, which hit shelves on November 19. The Australian supermodel, 60, candidly discusses her history with drinking, particularly during her time as a mother in London, where she found solace in alcohol after tucking her two sons, Flynn and Cy, into bed.
In her recollections, Macpherson explains that post-bedtime was often when she would indulge in vodka shots, reflecting on her routine of writing lists and letters while blasting music. This nightly ritual was laid bare as she revealed that she would get up in the morning to run six miles, only to purge her system at night.
One particularly alarming story detailed a vacation in Ibiza with her then-partner Arpad “Arki” Busson and their children, where her struggle peaked. Frustrated about missing out on nightlife, she smashed open a vodka bottle, inadvertently pouring herself a drink that could have contained dangerous glass shards. “I hurriedly poured myself a shot that could have been littered with shards of glass. And I drank it,” she recounted, leading to a moment of self-realization after several drinks.
Recognizing the need for change, Macpherson returned to London to seek help, checking into rehab while her children were quite young. She reflected on how alcohol affected her personal and professional life, recalling missing her cue during the 2000 Summer Olympics closing ceremony due to her inebriated state.
Despite maintaining an image of organization and control, Macpherson admitted to living in a façade, ensuring that everything appeared perfectly in place while concealing her drinking habits. “People would tell me I was so organized. I was really proud of that,” she noted.
In addition to her struggle with alcohol, Macpherson also alluded to her recent battle with breast cancer, emphasizing her choice to pursue alternative treatments. “Cancer is not an option for me anymore. Like drinking is not an answer for me,” she asserted.
Macpherson’s revelations contribute to a larger conversation about addiction and recovery, echoing the experiences of other celebrities who have openly discussed their struggles with substance use.
