Exclusive: Artist Friend Reveals Never-Before-Seen Images of Richard Simmons After His Shocking Death

Months after the unexpected passing of Richard Simmons, new images of the beloved fitness icon have surfaced, shared by his close friend Mauro Oliveira. Oliveira, who served as Simmons’ personal assistant from March 2013 to May 2014, credits himself as the late star’s “only true friend” during his final years. He has spoken exclusively about their close relationship and revealed previously unseen photographs of Simmons.

In a heartfelt statement, Oliveira expressed, “I was the only true friend Richard Simmons ever had. He told me, and I knew it.” An artist himself, he mentioned that Simmons had commissioned ten pieces of artwork from him during their time together.

Richard Simmons, known for his hit workout series “Sweatin’ to the Oldies,” retreated from the public eye in February 2014 after a long career that included appearances on popular shows such as “Saturday Night Live” and “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Oliveira shared that Simmons’ absence from Hollywood was primarily due to a knee injury.

Simmons passed away on July 13, the day after celebrating his 76th birthday. An investigation into his death indicated it was accidental, with the coroner noting “sequelae of blunt traumatic injuries” following a ground-level fall. The report detailed various bruises on Simmons’ body and a palpable fracture to his left femur. Additionally, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease was listed as a significant contributing factor to his death.

Just two days before his sudden passing, Simmons participated in what would be his final interview, where he acknowledged the public’s concern for him. He stated, “I know people miss me. And you know what? I miss them, too. But I’m able to reach them through phone calls… and through emails.” He also mentioned he occasionally left his home but preferred to do so in disguise.

In the aftermath of his death, a dispute over Simmons’ estimated $20 million estate has emerged between his brother, Leonard Simmons, and his former caretaker, Teresa Reveles Muro. Muro has filed legal claims asserting that Leonard pressured her into stepping down as co-trustee and is now seeking to be reinstated.

Oliveira, aiming to honor Simmons’ legacy, is in talks with various streaming services to produce a documentary about the fitness legend’s life and impact.
