‘General Hospital’ and ‘Risky Business’ Star Nicholas Pryor Dead Aged 89 After Cancer Battle: ‘He Was an Actor’s Actor’

Nicholas Pryor, the beloved actor known for his roles in General Hospital and Risky Business, has passed away at the age of 89 following a courageous battle with cancer. His widow, actress Christine Belford, confirmed the sad news, which was shared through a touching note left by Pryor himself. He took immense pride in his nearly seven-decade career as a working actor and expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had throughout his life.

Pryor, who portrayed Tom Cruise’s father in the iconic film Risky Business, also had notable roles on popular television shows, including as Kathleen Robertson’s father on Beverly Hills, 90210, and appearances in the General Hospital spin-off Port Charles. He died in the comfort of his Wilmington, North Carolina home.

The announcement of his passing was made by Jon Lindstrom, Pryor’s co-star on General Hospital, via Instagram, where he described Pryor as an “actor’s actor” and a cherished friend. He was celebrated not just for his talent, but also for his warm personality and dedication to his craft.

Throughout his extensive career, Pryor was featured in various soap operas, including The Secret Storm, All My Children, and Another World. His impressive filmography also includes roles in classic films such as Smile, Airplane!, and Less Than Zero, where he played Robert Downey Jr.’s father.

Born on January 28, 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland, Pryor’s early involvement in the theater included studying at the renowned Gilman School and Yale University. After earning his degree in 1956, he made a striking Broadway debut the following year and performed alongside notable figures such as Joan Bennett and Diana Douglas.

Pryor’s return to the stage in the 1970s saw him in productions like That Championship Season, further solidifying his status as a versatile performer. After marrying his fourth wife Christine Belford in July 1993, the couple connected while working on Beverly Hills, 90210, sharing both personal and professional bonds.
