Real-Life Appearance of SM-33 from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

What Does SM-33 From Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Look Like in Real Life

In the ever-expanding universe of Star Wars, one vital element has always been a comedic robot that adds a unique flair to the adventure. In the latest series, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” this role is filled by the burly, one-eyed robot known as SM-33. This mechanical companion trundles through the episodes, taking on the villains that challenge the heroes led by Captain Fern, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. If you’ve been paying attention, you might have caught on to the voice behind this formidable bot: it’s none other than Nick Frost, famed for his roles in the beloved Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.

Frost first made waves in the cult classic series “Spaced,” collaborating with Simon Pegg, before they all made their mark on the horror-comedy genre with the 2003 hit “Shaun of the Dead.” Teaming up again, they created the other entries in the Cornetto trilogy, “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End.” Frost also starred in the sci-fi comedy “Paul” and appeared in films like “Attack the Block” and “Fighting with My Family,” along with a notable role in the fan-favorite series “Into the Badlands.” Horror enthusiasts might remember his chilling performance in the film “Black Cab,” adding another credit to his impressive resume.

Reception for “Skeleton Crew” has been largely positive among critics, but what drew Frost to this project wasn’t simply the opportunity to join the Star Wars legacy; it was the fact that he wouldn’t be on screen. In a candid conversation with Fantha Tracks TV, Frost shared his hesitations about stepping into the Star Wars universe, as his friend Pegg had previously played Unkar Plutt in “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.” Frost likened his reluctance to his appreciation for another beloved franchise, the “Alan Partridge” series.

He revealed, “I once turned down a role in ‘Alan Partridge’ because I liked it too much to just make a cameo.” However, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” presented him with the perfect solution. “Here, I could be a part of the Star Wars universe while maintaining my anonymity. I get to voice the incredible SM-33, but without actually seeing myself on screen,” Frost explained.

Moreover, there was an intriguing bonus that clinched his decision to take on the role. “They showed me some concept art, and he had a rat in his eye,” Frost remarked, fascinated by the idea of a pirate-like robot with a quirky twist. “The thought of a character akin to a ‘Ratatouille’ version of a robot was something I had never seen in the franchise before, and it excited me.”
