Swiss Commuters Float to Work by Jumping into a River

In Switzerland, a remarkable commuting trend has surfaced, where some locals are opting for a rather unconventional method of getting to work—floating down a river. Recently, DJ and producer Diplo captured the attention of social media with a TikTok video showcasing this unique mode of transportation, and it’s sparked considerable intrigue.

While staying in Basel, Diplo spotted commuters leisurely drifting along the river right outside his hotel. He described it as an adventurous and enjoyable experience, sharing snippets of his observations with his followers. According to local sources, Basel’s Rhine River is quite popular in the summer months, offering a scenic float for those looking to escape the traditional office commute. Visitors can conveniently stow their belongings in something called a Wickelfisch, a waterproof swim bag, and let themselves be carried along the gentle current past the beautiful Old Town.

But Basel isn’t the sole city where such a riverside commute is encouraged. The Aare River in Bern, Switzerland’s picturesque capital, also draws thousands of residents and visitors alike each summer. Many people take to the milky glacial waters, floating downstream to catch designated exits marked by red bars, making it a fun and accessible activity for everyone.

Inspired by what he witnessed, Diplo decided to join in on the fun. He cleverly devised a plan: after completing a 5k run, he would grab a dry bag to stow his belongings and embark on this waterborne adventure. He made a brief detour to chat with locals about where to find these dry bags, ultimately referring to one local shop as a “Swiss Target,” where he acquired his very own Wickelfisch.

With his gear secured, Diplo prepared for the river journey, humorously taking off his shirt as part of the experience. Before long, he was happily floating down the river, capturing the excitement of this refreshing commute. He ultimately declared, “This is the only way I’m commuting now,” leaving many to ponder whether they would be open to trying such a unique transportation method.

The concept of using rivers for commuting is not just a quirky phenomenon; it’s a delightful blend of relaxation and the need to navigate daily life. Would you consider taking the plunge and floating your way to work? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
