The tragic death of comedian Tommy Cooper on stage has haunted many, particularly those closest to him. On the fateful night of April 15, 1984, Tommy, known as the King of Comedy during the 70s, suffered a fatal heart attack while performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. Unbeknownst to the audience of 12 million, including his wife Gwen Henty, Tommy had confided in his assistant and mistress, Mary Kay, about a premonition of his demise.

Years later, Tony Kay, Mary’s son, recounted the chilling events surrounding that night. He recalled how the audience was initially laughing when Tommy collapsed, but Mary sensed something was terribly wrong. “When he collapsed and everyone was laughing, she knew instantly that something was off,” Tony recounted. He revealed that, before his last show, Tommy had shared his fear that he might die on stage.

Mary, devastated by Tommy’s sudden passing, never truly recovered from the loss. “Mum was distraught. She never got over the death of Tommy,” Tony stated. Mary passed away in 2011 at the age of 83, living with the stigma of being branded “Mad Mary” after Tommy’s death, often depicted in a negative light.

Tony described their relationship, suggesting that although it may have seemed straightforward, it was much more complex. “Maybe he loved her in his own way, but she was infatuated with him,” he said. He hinted that Tommy exploited Mary’s affection, requiring someone to take care of him during tours, while never intending to leave Gwen, with whom he shared two children.

Gwen, who married Tommy in 1947, appeared to turn a blind eye to the affair, according to Tony. Tommy’s dual life created a web of intrigue and heartache, with Tony emphasizing that while his mother had an idealized vision of Tommy, it did not encompass his imperfections.

“Despite her deep feelings for him, it seems clear that he took advantage of her,” Tony concluded. This poignant tale surrounding Tommy Cooper serves as a reminder of the complexities of love and loss, even among the glitz of show business.
