RHOC’s Lydia McLaughlin Reveals Mom Judy’s Breast Cancer Battle

Lydia McLaughlin, an alum of The Real Housewives of Orange County, has opened up about her late mother Judy Stirling’s private fight against breast cancer. In a heartfelt post on her Instagram Story dated October 23, McLaughlin, who is 43, revealed that her mother battled the disease for several years, ultimately living two years longer than doctors had anticipated. “She was very private about being sick; she never wanted that to be part of her identity,” McLaughlin shared. “She is the strongest person I’ve ever met, and I learned so much through this journey with her.”

The former reality star, who featured in two seasons of RHOC in 2013 and 2017, noted that the show’s producers were informed of her mother’s diagnosis at the end of season 12 filming but respected their privacy regarding the matter. “My mom was my best friend,” she expressed in another touching Instagram Story. “She was our world, and I am so thankful to be her daughter.”

On October 9, McLaughlin announced the passing of her mother at the age of 76. Just days later, she organized a celebration of life filled with her mother’s favorite things, like crepes and confetti. “I am thankful for the outpouring of love and support,” McLaughlin wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful to not grieve alone. I am honored to be her daughter and will forever carry her in my spirit.”

As she navigates her grief, McLaughlin has been finding solace in her faith and a Bible study focused on prayers for those encountering loss. “There’s no formula to grieve,” she advised her followers. “Be patient with yourself and let yourself feel all your feelings. One moment I’m okay, and the next I cry. … I am convinced I will be reunited with my mom. I know God is close to the brokenhearted, and He is close to me and to you.”

McLaughlin hopes that fans will continue to remember her mother as a loving and joyful person. The impactful moments shared between McLaughlin and Stirling were also highlighted in a digital series titled Glitter Town. “I can’t put into words what my mom means to me,” McLaughlin reflected in February 2023. “She is the best mother, my best friend, and the whole world to my boys. She is a ball of joy and the definition of a free spirit. I love you @ocjudymom.”
