Downton Abbey Movie Update: Disappointing Yet Anticipated

In a revelation that’s both surprising and anticipated, Hugh Bonneville, the beloved star of Downton Abbey, has officially confirmed that the third installment of the film series is on the way. Set to debut in September 2025, this upcoming film is likely the last hurrah for the franchise that captured audiences’ hearts.

 

During a recent conversation on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Bonneville shared the bittersweet news that production on what he described as the “probably final” Downton Abbey film wrapped this summer. He emphasized that the film is a fitting conclusion to the ongoing narrative that has charmed fans over the years.

 

He mentioned, “It’s a wonderful sort of closing off of all the stories, so it’s a proper film for the fans.” This news aligns with hints dropped by other cast members in the past, making it less of an unexpected announcement.

 

In his remarks, Bonneville also touched on the poignant farewell to the late dame Maggie Smith, a key figure in the series. He remarked, “It’s very much set in the house and saying goodbye to all these characters, and we obviously say goodbye to Dame Maggie, which was extremely moving on screen and now in real life. She’ll be greatly missed.”
