A Lord of the Rings Actor Seeks Return to Star Trek Universe

An Actor from Lord of the Rings Expresses Desire to Rejoin the Star Trek Franchise

In the acclaimed 2001 fantasy film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, actor John Rhys-Davies brought to life the character of Gimli the Dwarf, a humorously rugged warrior who added levity to the epic tale. Rhys-Davies reprised his role in the subsequent films and lent his voice to various video game adaptations tied to the franchise. Additionally, he took on memorable supporting roles like Gloin and Treebeard. While his connection to The Lord of the Rings stands out prominently in his career, Rhys-Davies has a rich background that includes appearances in numerous iconic productions over the years.

Alongside his work in The Lord of the Rings, Rhys-Davies has shared the screen with Indiana Jones in various films (most recently in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), voiced characters in popular Disney animations, and acted across a wide array of horror and adventure films. His talent extends to leading roles in several sci-fi television series, voicing superheroes, and participating in renowned literary adaptations. With his incredible vocal range and unwavering professionalism, Rhys-Davies has crafted one of the most respected resumes in acting.

Now, in a revelation that captures the imagination, Rhys-Davies has voiced his wish for a deeper connection with the Star Trek universe. Having guest-starred in Star Trek: Voyager episodes “Scorpion” and “Concerning Flight,” he portrayed a holographic version of Leonardo da Vinci, engaging in insightful conversations with Captain Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew. At the Megacon pop culture convention earlier this year, Rhys-Davies expressed a desire to have been involved with Star Trek in a more significant capacity throughout his career.

Reflecting on his time in 1997, Rhys-Davies noted a missed opportunity for a recurring role on Voyager. His character served as an unofficial counselor for Janeway, providing her with a historical perspective when needed. During his candid moment at Megacon, he quickly stated, “I wish I had done more Star Trek,” hinting at the potential for further exploration within the franchise.

Star Trek’s format allows for a multitude of unique characters, and Rhys-Davies could certainly have stepped into various roles beyond his original portrayal. Actors like Vaughn Armstrong and Jeffrey Combs are known for their diverse roles within the Star Trek universe, showcasing the endless possibilities. While Rhys-Davies did not specify what type of character he would have liked to play, he expressed admiration for the Voyager cast, commending their remarkable performances and storytelling prowess.

Having gained experience in the realm of science fiction through his lengthy role in the cult classic Sliders, Rhys-Davies is no stranger to ensemble cast dynamics. He appreciated the artistry displayed by the Voyager actors, remarking, “It’s wonderful just watching your fellow actors do wonderful things and getting away with it.” The longing to explore similar opportunities is palpable.

As of now, Starfleet Academy is in production, and there is still a chance for Rhys-Davies to step back into a role, perhaps even as a seasoned professor within this intriguing galactic institution. If his schedule allows, fans may just get to see him return to the beloved franchise, fulfilling a wish that resonates with many Trekkies.
