Alabama Barker Clarifies “Insensitive” Remarks About Not Voting in 2024 Election

Alabama Barker Clarifies Controversial Voting Comments After Facing Backlash

In a recent social media livestream, Alabama Barker, the daughter of renowned musician Travis Barker, sparked heated discussion after expressing her decision not to participate in the 2024 presidential election. She stated, “I don’t care to vote if I don’t know exactly what’s going on… If I don’t want to vote, I don’t have to vote. And if I don’t want to be in politics, I don’t have to be in politics.”

At just 18 years old, Alabama admitted that her lack of knowledge about the candidates led her to conclude that voting was not right for her this year. “It’s kinda immature if I talk about it, and I’m not fully educated, but I do have an opinion, and I’ll keep it to myself,” she remarked, acknowledging the difficulty of participating in political discourse without a solid understanding.

Alabama elaborated, questioning, “If I don’t feel I have the exact education for what I’m voting for, how is it right for me to vote for something I’m not completely educated on?” Despite recognizing that she could educate herself before the election, she pointedly asked, “Why am I doing that if I genuinely really don’t care?”

The influencer, who celebrated her 18th birthday last December, emphasized that she has never voted before and feels no obligation to do so without adequate knowledge. She stated, “I’ve never voted. If I don’t want to vote, I don’t have to vote. And if I don’t want to be in politics, I don’t have to be in politics.”

During her livestream, Alabama hinted that she does have thoughts on the presidential candidates but refrained from naming specific individuals, such as Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. She confessed, “I feel like one of the voters is just a mess,” adding, “I’m not educated. I’m a little bit stupid,” which drew criticism from viewers.

Responding to comments suggesting her views stemmed from her privilege, Alabama countered, “Like, what? Because I don’t want to vote? I’m not educated on it. Maybe next year I’ll vote.” Despite her candidness, many interpreted her remarks as ignorant or privileged, igniting a wave of backlash online.

In response to the criticism, Alabama took to Instagram to clarify her earlier statements. “I would like to clarify my recent statements regarding voting, which have been widely discussed on various social media platforms,” she opened. The young star expressed her primary concern over feeling inadequately informed about the candidates, stating, “I acknowledge that during a recent live stream, I mistakenly mentioned next year’s election; I realize elections occur every four years, and I understand how this may appear insensitive or uninformed. I am committed to educating myself further on this matter.”

With her clarification, Alabama Barker aims to take responsibility for her words and shows a willingness to learn more about the political landscape as the election approaches.
