Death in Paradise: Don Gilet Receives Caution from Former Cast Member Regarding Challenging Show
Don Gilet is set to make his debut on the beloved series Death in Paradise this weekend, stepping into the prominent role of Inspector Mervin Wilson. His first appearance airs on Sunday, December 22, as he takes over from Ralf Little, who enjoyed a four-and-a-half-year run as DI Neville Parker. However, in anticipation of his new role, Gilet has received a noteworthy caution from a past star of the show.
Former cast member Ardal O’Hanlon, who portrayed DI Jack Mooney from 2017 to 2020, recently opened up about the demanding nature of working on Death in Paradise. In an exclusive interview, he recounted the grueling schedule, stating that he frequently worked 12-hour days in the challenging Caribbean climate, with very little time off. O’Hanlon explained, “People don’t believe you when you tell them how tough it was. It was intense, and while I was grateful for the opportunity, it was a life-changing experience. You’re not just acting in a popular BBC series; it’s a whole lifestyle.”
He also expressed envy towards the guest stars who appeared on the show. “I’m not complaining about the workload, but with so much preparation required daily, there’s little time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings,” he lamented. “Those guest actors would come for a short stint, often spending their free time lounging by the pool with cocktails, while I was working.”
Ardal revealed that producers had given him a sobering warning before he began filming. “They told me upfront that I might only last two or three years on the show, but four years would be pushing it. The environment can be unpredictable; hurricanes and the isolation can really test your limits. You soon realize that it’s not just about the work—it’s about how you adapt to everything around you.”
Newcomer Don Gilet has echoed some of Ardal’s sentiments regarding filming in the sweltering heat of Guadeloupe. “It’s quite intense,” he remarked, acknowledging the challenges posed by the heat throughout long shooting days. “You eventually acclimatize to it, but it demands an extra level of focus. You can’t turn down the temperature, but you have to appreciate the stunning backdrop we’re working against. At times, I have to remind myself of the incredible location and what I’m doing here.”
