Hilary Duff and her husband Matthew Koma got into the Halloween spirit by dressing up as Joel and Benji Madden for a dinner with her ex, Joel Madden, and his wife, Nicole Richie. Sharing their playful costumes on Instagram Stories, Koma, 37, captioned a photo of the duo styled in the Madden brothers’ iconic black apparel, indicating their fun intentions for the evening on October 30.

The connections run deep, as Duff, also 37, previously dated Joel, now 45, from 2005 to 2006 while she was working on her “Most Wanted” album. Following that relationship, Joel found lasting love with Richie, 43, whom he wed in 2010. The couple shares two children, Harlow, 16, and Sparrow, 14. Joel has openly spoken about his relationships, expressing respect for all his past partners. In a 2007 interview, he reflected on friendships post-romance, stating that while he doesn’t feel the need to remain friends, he always strives for respect.

Many celebrities manage to maintain a positive rapport with their former partners, showcasing the potential for supportive relationships after splits. For instance, Miranda Kerr has voiced her appreciation for her bond with Katy Perry, the fiancée of her ex-husband, Orlando Bloom.

Duff’s connection with Joel has continued to evolve, as she revealed on “Watch What Happens Live” earlier this year about her good relationship with Joel and Nicole. She emphasized the time they spend together as a family, mentioning how they often hang out. Matthew, her husband, even adds a humorous touch, joking about how he photoshopped a Valentine’s Day image of Joel and Benji alongside Duff.

Reflecting on her past with Joel, Duff called the experience “intense,” recalling how it was all-consuming during that chapter of her life. Today, she happily carries on her friendship with Joel and Nicole, showing that it’s possible to navigate relationships with grace and humor after heartfelt connections fade.
