Matthew Perry’s Family Calls His Death ‘Shattering’ and ‘Shocking’ One Year After Ketamine Overdose

Matthew Perry’s Family Reflects on His ‘Shattering’ Death One Year Later

Matthew Perry’s sister and stepfather have shared their feelings about the actor’s tragic death, calling it “shattering” one year after he was discovered unresponsive due to a drug overdose. In an emotional conversation, they revealed how they have been honoring the ‘Friends’ star since his passing.

Keith Morrison and his daughter, Caitlin, have been actively involved with the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada, working tirelessly to raise awareness and support for individuals facing addiction — a struggle that Matthew was all too familiar with. Caitlin, now 43, has taken on the role of executive director for the Canadian foundation, which complements the efforts of its U.S. counterpart.

In her remarks to a Canadian publication, Caitlin expressed that her work feels like a way to stay connected to her brother. “It feels like I’m sitting right next to Matthew, working with him every day on something he cared about deeply,” she said, adding that she treasures their bond through this mission.

Perry was found dead in his jacuzzi in October 2023 at the age of 54. Caitlin emphasized her continuous reflection of Matthew, saying, “I have this treasure of keeping him close to my life, which is wonderful.”

Matthew’s stepfather, at 77, believes that Perry would be proud of their initiatives. “He would like to be remembered for doing something to help people suffering from addiction,” Keith reflected.

Matthew’s mother, Suzanne, also plays a crucial role in the charitable foundation. She serves on the board alongside Matthew’s childhood friend Brian Murray and mental health expert Cara Vaccarino. Together, they focus on creating a positive impact in the realm of addiction support.

Both Keith and Caitlin openly shared their grief over the loss of Matthew. Keith said, “Anyone who has lost a child will tell you it’s shattering, even when you expect it could happen.” Yet, they have channeled their sorrow into efforts aimed at making a difference.

Caitlin fondly remembered her brother’s vibrant personality, describing how he could light up a room. “He had this magnetic energy that brought smiles to people’s faces,” she recalled. She views herself as Matthew’s little sister, always in admiration of her brother’s extraordinary spirit and the life lessons he imparted, such as the importance of perseverance.

The Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada launched on November 3, 2023, just days following his death on October 28. Preliminary autopsy results indicated that Perry succumbed to the acute effects of ketamine.

In a statement at the foundation’s launch, his family emphasized the significance of honoring Matthew’s legacy. “It’s crucial for us to carry forward his mission and help others battling this disease. We’re proud to contribute to this cause,” they said.
