Brazil’s Supreme Court has imposed a hefty fine of 10 million reais, roughly translating to $1.9 million, on the social media platform X, the entity owned by Elon Musk. This latest ruling builds on an earlier fine of $3.3 million previously sanctioned by the court.
Since late August, X has faced a ban in Brazil after a judge determined that the platform failed to follow directives aimed at curbing hate speech and appointing a local legal representative.
According to the court, settling the $1.9 million fine will enable X to “immediately return to its activities within national territory.”
In response to the situation, X informed the court that it has already taken steps by blocking nine accounts investigated for spreading hate speech, aligning with directives to combat misinformation.
Earlier this month, a judge directed that assets from X and Starlink be used to cover the previously mandated $3.3 million fine. However, reports indicate that X may contest the recent $1.9 million penalty.
Musk has criticized the court’s actions, describing them as “censorship” and labeling the judge as a “dictator.”
