Burning Man 2024 began with tragedy as authorities are investigating the death of a female participant on the festival’s opening day, Sydtomarket.net reports.
On August 25, around 11:30 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of an unresponsive woman, according to event officials.
Despite medics’ efforts, they were unable to save her. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office was notified, and deputies were dispatched to the scene.
The next day, August 26, the deceased woman was identified as 39-year-old Kendra Frazer. Police stated that her death remains under investigation pending an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. Her family has been informed.
In a statement, Burning Man officials expressed their condolences to Kendra’s family and friends, and reminded attendees that peer support services and the Black Rock City’s Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support team are available.
Burning Man, held annually in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, is no stranger to fatalities. Last year, a man named Leon Reece from Truckee, California, was found unresponsive at the festival and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The festival is also infamous for its “orgy dome,” described as an “air-conditioned sex haven,” where around 5,000 people participate each year. Attendees are screened for sobriety and given rules for conduct before entering the space, which features mattresses lining a central walkway. One attendee described feeling comfortable once seeing others engage in the activities, making it easier to join in.
