Lauren Boebert Closes Cameo Account Following House Ethics Scrutiny
In a recent turn of events, Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has deactivated her Cameo account just days after it was launched. The decision comes amid concerns regarding potential violations of ethical guidelines for House members.
Boebert, who was charging $250 for personalized video messages, initially expressed excitement about connecting with her supporters through the app. In a promotional video, she proclaimed, “It’s your girl from Colorado, Lauren Boebert. I am so excited to be joining another platform where I can connect directly with supporters from all over the world.” She offered her services for occasions ranging from heartfelt greetings to motivational talks.
However, shortly after her account went live, ethical implications regarding her participation began to surface. Observers questioned the legality of profiting from Cameo videos while serving in Congress. The rapid deactivation of her account came on a Tuesday, just a short time after former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) joined the platform, charging $500 for his videos. Gaetz’s involvement followed his exit from contention for a position within Donald Trump’s cabinet, amid his own controversies.
House Ethics Committee regulations state that members can earn up to $31,815 annually from activities outside of their congressional paycheck, but there are strict limitations about how that income may be generated. One such guideline prohibits accepting honoraria for speeches, writings, or similar activities connected to their congressional role. This includes any presentation, whether delivered in person or via electronic means.
Donald K. Sherman, the executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, indicated that Boebert’s Cameo account could likely infringe upon these established rules governing honoraria solicitation. He noted that while there are exceptions for certain types of paid activities, it would be difficult to justify earning money on Cameo given the direct correlation to her congressional status.
In a climate where the ethical conduct of lawmakers is under heightened scrutiny, Boebert’s brief dalliance with Cameo has raised questions about the broader implications of politicians utilizing social media platforms for personal profit.
