Marilyn Monroe’s Authentic Side Uncovered in Newly Discovered Photos

In an exciting reveal, unearthed photographs capture a more genuine and candid aspect of Marilyn Monroe, showcasing the legendary actress like never before. A new book titled “Marilyn Monroe: By Eve Arnold” offers over 100 fresh and restored images taken by renowned photographer Eve Arnold, diving into the intimate moments shared between the two.

Eve Arnold first crossed paths with Marilyn at a Hollywood party in early 1952, impressed by Arnold’s striking photos of Marlene Dietrich. Marilyn expressed her admiration, saying, “If you could do that with Dietrich, just imagine what you could do with me.” This marked the beginning of a decade-long collaboration, during which Arnold captured Marilyn in a light that deviated from the common sultry portrayals frequently shot by male photographers. Arnold’s grandson, Michael, notes that Eve’s close friendship with Marilyn allowed her to present a more natural and unfiltered side of the star.

One memorable incident highlighted in the book is a press event at New York’s Plaza Hotel on February 6, 1956, for Marilyn’s film with Laurence Olivier. During the conference, one of Marilyn’s dress straps broke, creating a chaotic scene as reporters scrambled for a safety pin. According to Michael, Marilyn winked at Eve afterward, indicating the mishap had been intentional to stir up excitement.

After Marilyn’s untimely passing, Eve held tightly to her collection of photographs, later publishing “Marilyn Monroe: An Appreciation” in 1987. Motivated by the sensationalized portrayals of Monroe that depicted her solely as a “dumb blonde” or a sex symbol, Eve sought to present a different narrative—one anchored in authenticity and respect.

The newly released book, a labor of love, carefully curates photos that collectively tell a story, revealing aspects of Marilyn’s life that many have yet to see. As Michael explains, this compilation allows readers an opportunity to discover the multifaceted person behind the iconic image, shining a light on the beloved actress’s life beyond the glamorous facade.

In a landscape filled with cliched notions of Marilyn Monroe, this collection serves as a poignant reminder of her complexity and the rich friendship she shared with Eve Arnold, an ally who understood the depth of her spirit.
