X-Men #8: Exclusive Preview of the Graymalkin Raid

The Raid on Graymalkin Kicks Off in Marvel’s X-Men #8

Marvel Comics stands out once more as it introduces the highly anticipated crossover event “Raid on Graymalkin” in X-Men #8. Since the 1990s, the continuous evolution of X-Men comic series has allowed Marvel to orchestrate substantial crossover events solely focused on mutant teams. Some notable past events include “The Age of Apocalypse,” “Messiah Complex,” “X of Swords,” and now, this latest venture.

“Raid on Graymalkin” marks the inaugural crossover of the fresh “From the Ashes” era of X-Men comics, uniting two prominent series: “X-Men” under the creative direction of Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman, and “Uncanny X-Men” crafted by Gail Simone and David Marquez. The overarching narrative of “From the Ashes” tackles the current predicament of mutantkind following the loss of their sanctuary, Krakoa, resulting in a global displacement of the X-Men.

In this new landscape, the “X-Men” series centers on familiar favorites like Cyclops, Magneto, Psylocke, and Beast, who have found refuge in Merle, Alaska. Meanwhile, “Uncanny X-Men” explores Rogue and Gambit in Louisiana, accompanied by Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and a group of four mutant runaways known as the Outliers who are in desperate need of guidance.

The term “Graymalkin” refers to the fortified prison constructed from the once-vibrant Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. This gripping storyline unfolds over four parts, starting with “X-Men” #8, then moving to “Uncanny X-Men” #7, followed by “X-Men” #9, and concluding with “Uncanny X-Men” #8. An exclusive preview of “X-Men” #8 has been shared, revealing this intriguing synopsis: “RAID ON GRAYMALKIN” PART ONE! With one of their own imprisoned, the X-Men launch an assault on Graymalkin Prison to rescue their teammate. But it’s not just a singular mission; Cyclops’ team in Alaska prepares for a daring rescue while Rogue’s team in Louisiana embarks on their separate operation. With diverging strategies and competing objectives, will these two groups find themselves at odds? After all, an “X” is formed when two lines intersect.

The tension between Cyclops and Rogue has been simmering since the beginning of “From the Ashes.” The climactic page of “Uncanny X-Men” #1 depicted the two united back to back, hinting at their emerging roles as cornerstone leaders for mutantkind, known as “pillars of the House of X.” This begs the question: what will be the nature of their ideological conflict? How does Cyclops’ vision of mutant protection clash with Rogue’s perspective? And how will “Raid on Graymalkin” intensify this rivalry?

The cover of “X-Men” #8, illustrated by Stegman, showcases Rogue delivering a punch to Cyclops, with her crimson eyes glowing, indicating she may have absorbed his powers. Will their heated differences escalate into a physical confrontation in the upcoming issue?

The central focus of the X-Men’s mission to Graymalkin is to liberate Beast. Issue #7 previously hinted at his abduction by shadowy foes, laying the groundwork for the “Raid on Graymalkin.” “X-Men” #8 begins with a recap, followed by scenes of Hank awakening in his confinement and facing his new captors.

In Alaska, the remaining X-Men, including Cyclops, Temper, Psylocke, Xorn, and Quentin Quire, discover that Hank is missing. Using his psychic abilities, Mr. Quire traces the kidnappers’ path to Westchester. While Psylocke warns against hasty action, Cyclops remains resolute about his commitment to save his “brother” and dismantle the Graymalkin facility.

It’s pivotal to note Cyclops’ remark about Hank—”he became a monster […] but now my brother is back.” This reference ties into Beast’s complex journey during the Krakoa era portrayed in “X-Force” by Benjamin Percy. In that storyline, Beast assumed the role of leader within Krakoa’s global intelligence agency, leading to increasingly ruthless actions that ultimately positioned him as a villain. In “X-Force,” members utilized resurrection technology to create a version of Beast that retained memories from years prior. While this new Hank embodies the hero he was once celebrated as, he grapples with the horror of his past decisions. Clearly, “Raid on Graymalkin” will delve deeply into the aftermath of Beast’s choices.

Additionally, echoes from the Terra Verde plot arise from Percy’s work in “X-Force,” detailing Beast’s manipulation of the President’s son, thereby turning the country into a mere puppet of Krakoa. While the initial preview pages do not clarify how the Uncanny X-Men fit into this assault, it should be noted that the first arc of “Uncanny X-Men” involved Rogue battling an imposing Graymalkin agent known as the Hag, culminating in a promise to reclaim their home.

Intriguingly, another unpredictable element comes into play: Professor Charles Xavier is currently imprisoned within Graymalkin. Yet, revelations from “X-Men” #35 alluded to his capability to still wield his telepathic powers while appearing helpless. Will Professor X play a significant role in the upcoming raid? Stay tuned as this dynamic narrative unfolds.

“X-Men” #8 is set for release both in print and digitally on December 2, 2024.
