Chrissy Metz Remembers Stepfather’s Weight Threats and Locking Cupboards

In a heartfelt chat on the Jamie Kern Lima Show, Chrissy Metz, known for her role in This Is Us, opened up about her challenging experiences with her stepfather during her formative years. Metz, 44, reminisces about feeling “singled out” regarding her weight, recalling instances where her stepfather would weigh her in the kitchen and even threaten to lock the cupboards to control her eating habits.

The actress shared her struggle to understand why her worth seemed tied to her weight. “At just 12 years old, it was difficult for me to reconcile this,” Metz revealed. She reflected on the emotional turmoil of feeling unworthy, especially in a world where children naturally seek love and acceptance from their parents.

Metz described these experiences as “devastating,” pointing out the dual nature of what she faced: the physical abuse might have been tangible, but the emotional scars ran deeper. She articulated how this emotional abuse felt like a series of small cuts, creating significant pain over time. “I’m trying to heal those wounds slowly but surely,” she noted, acknowledging the ongoing impact on her adult life.

The actress elaborated on her family dynamic, explaining that her mother struggled significantly, especially after Metz’s father departed. “My mom loved my stepfather, but it was clear she needed stability for us,” Metz stated.

Despite the past, Metz has sought to understand her stepfather’s intentions. “As an adult, I’ve come to think he may have loved me in his way, yet didn’t know how to express it,” she said. She acknowledged the complexity of “hurt people hurt people,” recognizing the pain that her stepfather may have carried from his own childhood.

Even now, Metz feels the echoes of her past in the way she navigates relationships and environments, often driven by a desire to please others. “The root of it all comes from a place of pain, and it’s still very real for me,” she admitted.

Metz’s reflections highlight the profound effects of childhood experiences on personal growth and healing, showcasing her journey through therapy and self-discovery.
